It’s not a wonder so many ladies are looking for hair care tips to create the best bantu knots and bantu knot outs.  Spring is in the air, and we’re all looking to rock a new style, even if we need a few hair care tips to get us started.  Bantu knots have been in the news lately and stars like Rihanna, Mel B, Lauryn Hill, Halle Berry, Jada Pinkett Smith have all been seen rocking bantu knots.  If you’re looking to try this trendy look, we’ve got some hair care tips for you to get you that great bantu knot look you’ve been seeing out and about.

Hair Care Tips For Bantu Knots and Bantu Knot Outs

Start with dry, well moisturized hair. Some will recommend beginning on damp hair, but as long as your hair is detangled and well moisturized, you will have better chances of a good result and you’ll lose the risk of your hair not drying while knotted.

Separate your hair into sections, and apply a really good moisturizer to the section. We recommend Nothing But Melted Shea Butter Leave-In Conditioner. The size of the sections depends on the length of your hair and also the resulting curl you desire. If you have short hair, or want tight curls, you may go with smaller sections, conversely, if you have longer hair or want a looser curl pattern, go with larger sections. Generally speaking, the smaller the section, the smaller (tighter) the curls will be in your knot out. Small sections are considered ½ inch to an inch, and larger sections can range from three to four inches. Experiment with which size sections give you the best look and have a little fun rocking different curl patterns.

Begin twisting the section close to but not on the scalp (twisting too close to the scalp can cause discomfort) and twist a few times until the hair begins to curl up on itself. Roll the curled sections around each other and continue twisting until you begin to form a pyramid shape (larger at the bottom.) Do not twist too tightly, as this can cause breakage and damage to your hair. To set the knot, twist the ends up under the knot to secure in place. Continue with each section until your head is completely knotted.

If your hair needs a little help setting, sleep with a shower cap on and allow the moisture to evaporate well in the morning before you unscrew your knots. You can also sit under a hooded dryer to set your curls.  Be sure to protect your style by sleeping on a satin pillow case.

The knot out process can be super simple as long as you don’t go at it the wrong way. Use these hair care tips when removing your bantu knots to ensure a gorgeous curl set.

  • Don’t pull the curl out when you remove the knot.
  • Unscrew the knots like you would untwist a cap
  • To decrease frizz, form and maintain the curls use only your fingers to separate.

And to keep those lovely locks in place for a few days, our final hair care tip is to use a little product to protect those curls.   We recommend Nothing But Curl Sealer, or Pure Pudding.  If you’d like to add a little shine to your curls, try our Argan & Olive Oil Nourishing Sheen Spray. Hopefully these hair care tips will inspire you to give bantu knots a try.
